Cyclone Remal Makes Landfall with Heavy Rains and Wind Speeds Over 110 km/h

Kolkata, June 7 – Cyclone Remal, the first major cyclone of the 2025 monsoon season, has made landfall in coastal West Bengal and southern Bangladesh, causing widespread destruction to homes, infrastructure, and crops.

With wind speeds exceeding 110 km/h, the storm uprooted trees, disrupted power supply, and flooded low-lying areas across Kolkata, Sundarbans, and parts of Khulna and Barisal in Bangladesh.

🔹 State Governments and NDRF Begin Relief and Rescue Operations

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Remal is likely to weaken into a deep depression over the next 24 hours, but not before causing significant damage.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 40+ teams across West Bengal, Odisha, and the India–Bangladesh border. Over 80,000 people were evacuated to cyclone shelters in time.

“We have ensured food, water, and medical care are available at all cyclone shelters,” said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while addressing the press on Saturday.

🔹 Flooding in Kolkata, Airport Shut, Train Services Affected

The Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata suspended operations for 12 hours due to strong winds. Train services along South Eastern Railway lines were also cancelled.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation reported that over 2,500 trees were uprooted and at least 400 electric poles damaged in the city alone. Waterlogging has been reported in major areas like Behala, Dum Dum, and Salt Lake.

🔹 Bangladesh Also Reports Casualties and Agricultural Losses

In Bangladesh, authorities confirmed at least 12 deaths and massive crop loss in Barisal, Khulna, and Satkhira districts. The Bangladesh Red Crescent Society is coordinating relief distribution and first aid.

Local farmers are expected to suffer heavy losses in paddy fields and shrimp farms, which are the main livelihood in these coastal regions.

🔹 Weather Update – More Rain Expected in Northeast India

The IMD has issued a heavy rain alert for Assam, Tripura, and Meghalaya over the next 48 hours due to the trailing effect of Cyclone Remal.

Residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid flood-prone areas, and follow local advisories.

📝 Conclusion: Relief Continues as Remal Moves Inland

While Cyclone Remal begins to weaken, the damage has already been done. Governments on both sides of the border are now focused on relief, restoration, and rehabilitation. It serves as another reminder of the vulnerability of the Bay of Bengal region to powerful tropical storms.
