Iran Suspends Nuclear Talks With U.S. After Israeli Strikes Spark Regional Alarm

Escalating Tensions After Operation Rising Lion

On June 13, 2025, Israel launched Operation Rising Lion, its largest air campaign inside Iranian territory in decades. Over 200 Israeli jets reportedly struck more than 100 nuclear and military sites, including uranium enrichment facilities in Natanz and underground missile depots near Esfahan. At least 6 senior Iranian nuclear scientists and 8 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commanders were killed.

🛈 IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) is Iran’s elite military force, designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S., but considered a national defense body by Iranian officials.

Iranian Government: “Talks Are Meaningless”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, issued a sharp statement:

“We cannot engage in nuclear diplomacy while under attack. The Iran nuclear talks are meaningless after this coordinated aggression.”

Tehran has formally withdrawn from the sixth round of Muscat-hosted nuclear negotiations with the U.S. and EU mediators.

Civilians React: ‘This Is Not Just Politics — It’s Our Lives’

In the city of Yazd, university student Leila Hosseini told Public Scoop:

“Every time there’s progress with diplomacy, violence returns. We want peace, not to be used as pawns in political chess.”

Local shopkeeper Ali Morteza added:

“The airstrikes weren’t just on military zones. We felt the tremors. We lost water and electricity. How is this not war?”

Historical Context: A Pattern of Escalation

This is not the first time diplomacy has collapsed under military pressure. In 2020, the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) triggered increased uranium enrichment by Iran. In 2022, Israel struck a military convoy near Syria during stalled negotiations.

Now, in 2025, Tehran claims Israel is sabotaging diplomacy again — with tacit U.S. support.

Expert Analysis: “Backchannel Dialogue Is Nearly Dead”

Dr. Hamed Rezaei, a nuclear policy expert at the University of Tehran, noted:

“By suspending Iran nuclear talks, Tehran signals the West that deterrence has failed. This could push Iran closer to nuclear breakout capabilities.”

Dr. Rachel Freeman, a former U.S. National Security Advisor, counters:

“Iran’s statement is tactical. It leaves room for return, but they want global condemnation of Israel first.”

Global Implications: What This Means for Oil, Markets, and Stability

  • Oil Prices surged by 7% within 12 hours of the strikes.
  • Brent Crude crossed $97 per barrel, the highest since early 2023.
  • Global stock indices dipped due to fears of broader war and energy instability.
  • Airlines rerouted flights to avoid Iranian and Israeli airspace, causing delays and higher operating costs.

“We’re entering a volatile phase for global trade,” says Fatima el-Ghazzawi, a MENA geopolitical strategist.

Military Retaliation & Risk of Regional War

Iran responded by launching:

  • 150+ ballistic missiles
  • 100+ drones
  • Targeting military and urban areas in Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Eilat

Israel’s Iron Dome intercepted many, but 3 civilians died, and dozens were injured.

UN & International Reaction: Urging Restraint

  • UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged “immediate de-escalation.”
  • The EU condemned the loss of civilian life on both sides.
  • Russia and China called the Israeli airstrikes a violation of sovereignty.
  • Saudi Arabia and UAE are on high alert and increasing border security.

Conclusion: Diplomacy at a Breaking Point

The collapse of Iran nuclear talks highlights the fragility of diplomacy under the weight of military aggression. With civilians caught in the middle and global markets rattled, the stakes have never been higher.
