Two people were killed after Russian drones struck a border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova, Ukrainian officials said, while a separate Ukrainian drone attack killed four people in the southern Russian city of Novorossiysk.
The Starokozache crossing, about 500km (310 miles) south of Kyiv, was closed after the overnight attack. Odesa regional governor Oleg Kiper said three other people were injured. Moldova’s foreign ministry said a Moldovan driver was also hurt.
Images from the scene showed scorched cars, wreckage and debris across the border post.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for further international support, saying: “The aggression must be stopped here and now before it spreads any further.”
Russia’s defence ministry said its forces had shot down 596 Ukrainian drones overnight.
In Novorossiysk, on Russia’s Black Sea coast, regional governor Veniamin Kondratiev said a “massive overnight enemy drone attack” had killed four people, including a child. Twenty-nine people were injured, while damage was reported to residential buildings, a church and a preschool.
The strikes came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone with US President Donald Trump about efforts to end the war. The Trump administration has been pressing for direct talks between Russia and Ukraine, with Kyiv saying negotiations could take place this month.
The Kremlin has said it is too early to discuss a date or venue for such talks. The phone call followed meetings in Moscow between Putin and US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, who later travelled to Kyiv to meet Zelensky.
Both Russia and Ukraine have stepped up long-range strikes in recent months despite renewed diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.
