📰 Russia Launches One of the Largest Airstrikes on Ukraine Since War Began

Overview of the Massive Russian Airstrike on Ukraine

In a devastating escalation of the ongoing war, Russia launched a massive airstrike on Ukraine on June 6, 2025, targeting nine regions and hitting cities like Kyiv, Kharkiv, Ternopil, and Lutsk. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that over 400 Iranian-made Shahed drones and more than 40 missiles were used in one of the largest aerial assaults since the invasion began in 2022.

According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Interior, the attack has so far claimed at least six lives and left over 80 injured, with significant damage reported to civilian structures, power grids, and infrastructure.

Why Did Russia Launch This Strike?

Retaliation Against Ukraine’s Operation Spiderweb

This attack was believed to be in direct retaliation for Ukraine’s covert “Operation Spiderweb,” in which Ukrainian drones reportedly hit Russian airbases deep inside Russian territory, damaging strategic bombers.

Ukrainian forces have increasingly targeted military infrastructure inside Russia, including airfields used for long-range bombing missions, signaling Kyiv’s aggressive shift in war strategy.

Cities Affected and Damage Assessment

Kyiv and Kharkiv Among the Worst Hit

Residential buildings in Kyiv’s Obolon district were hit, damaging homes and power lines. Kharkiv, which has been a frequent target, reported casualties and loss of communication services.

Impact on Civilian Life

Power outages were reported in multiple regions, and emergency services are overwhelmed. Hospitals in Ternopil and Vinnytsia operated on backup generators for several hours due to grid failures.

Zelensky’s Call for Global Action

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes, stating that “Russia’s attacks are not military actions—they are acts of terror against civilians.” He urged NATO, the EU, and the United States to increase both military aid and economic sanctions.

“This is not just a war on Ukraine. This is a war on peace and democracy,” Zelensky said during a press conference in Kyiv.

Will There Be a Response from the West?

Western leaders, including U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, have condemned the attacks, calling for immediate accountability. Talks of increased sanctions and air defense systems are already in motion.

The European Union has scheduled an emergency meeting to address further arms shipments and humanitarian aid. Some analysts believe the scale of the attack could lead to new sanctions on Russian energy exports.

The Road Ahead for Ukraine

As Ukraine braces for further escalations, many fear the war could expand beyond current borders if unchecked. Civil society groups, NGOs, and international watchdogs are urging for:

  • More air defense systems (like Patriot Missiles)
  • Increased humanitarian corridors
  • Global condemnation and UN resolutions
