After more than 10 years and more than 100 celebrity dates, Amelia Dimoldenberg is bringing her hit YouTube series Chicken Shop Date to an end after one final series.

The show’s mix of awkward flirting, deadpan silences and candid conversations has attracted guests from across music, film and sport. It grew from a youth club project and interviews with south London grime artists that Dimoldenberg conducted as a teenager for The Cut.

A breakthrough with Daniel Kaluuya

Nearly five years after the series began, Dimoldenberg landed her first major guest outside the rap scene when actor Daniel Kaluuya appeared in 2020.

During the date, she revealed that she would turn around when people shouted “chicken” at her in the street. The interview attracted about five million views, helping establish Chicken Shop Date as a destination for major celebrity guests.

Sir Paul McCartney, Lando Norris and Shania Twain were among those who later appeared on the show.

Jennifer Lawrence and “Phoebe”

One of the series’ most widely shared moments came during a 2023 date with Jennifer Lawrence.

While discussing marriage proposals, Dimoldenberg said she would not know what it felt like to be engaged. Lawrence looked at her and said, “Phoebe.”

“Did you just call me Phoebe?” Dimoldenberg replied. Lawrence then corrected herself, saying, “Amelia,” before the pair burst out laughing.

Sabrina Carpenter also confused Chicken Shop Date with the YouTube series Hot Ones when she appeared in 2024. Dimoldenberg later took part in a chilli challenge of her own that year.

The Andrew Garfield speculation

Andrew Garfield’s appearance generated online speculation about the pair’s chemistry after earlier red-carpet encounters. During the date, Garfield said things between them had been “vibey” for a while.

Dimoldenberg later said the pair were just friends. Other guests who appeared to hit it off with the host included Billie Eilish, while rumours also circulated about a possible relationship with rapper Aitch. Neither confirmed those reports.

Louis Theroux’s viral rap

When documentary maker Louis Theroux appeared in 2022, Dimoldenberg reminded him of a rap he had performed on his BBC series Weird Weekends.

Theroux recalled much of “Jiggle Jiggle”, his rap about red wine and driving a compact car despite being very tall. Music producers Duke & Jones later added autotune to a TikTok clip of the exchange. The clip has received almost 84 million views, and Theroux subsequently recorded a new version of the song with the duo.

One final series

Dimoldenberg has often asked guests about second dates, despite being turned down by artists including Central Cee, Digga D and Rosalía.

She did persuade her first Chicken Shop Date guest, rapper Ghetts, to return for a second appearance celebrating the show’s 10th anniversary in 2024.

In her farewell statement, Dimoldenberg wrote: “When I was 17, I thought that I might meet the love of my life on a date in a chicken shop.”

She added that she had spent her twenties sitting across from people she had always dreamed of meeting. One final series is still to come.
