England took control of the third Test against Pakistan after dismissing the visitors for 133 and reaching 156-4 at the close of the opening day at Edgbaston.
The hosts lead by 23 runs and moved closer to a potential 3-0 series sweep. Pakistan’s top five all failed to reach double figures, with Saud Shakeel’s 43 the highest score of their innings.
Josh Tongue led England’s attack with 4-42, while Ollie Robinson and Jofra Archer took three wickets each. Robinson also claimed his 100th Test wicket during the innings.
Pakistan briefly threatened England’s progress with the ball, reducing the hosts to 39-3. Emilio Gay then made 60 in a fourth-wicket stand of 104 with Harry Brook, who was unbeaten on 52 at the close.
Pakistan’s last-wicket pair, Muhammad Abbas and Mohammad Ali, added 26 runs, but their side was bowled out in 33.5 overs. England will resume on the second day with a narrow lead and six wickets remaining.
