Fifteen-year-old JJ Gabriel has attracted attention at Manchester United after scoring two outstanding goals in his first two Premier League 2 appearances.
Gabriel scored on his debut against Ipswich with a composed finish over the advancing goalkeeper. A week later, he produced a powerful individual effort, beating defenders before scoring from close range.
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has praised the teenager’s ability while stressing that his development is continuing. “He’s obviously got a really big talent,” Carrick said. “He’s trained with us quite a bit and is getting experience all the time.”
Gabriel was included in several of United’s pre-season trips and made a late substitute appearance against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm. The club has also shared footage of him training with the first team and interacting with forward Benjamin Sesko.
A senior debut before Gabriel turns 16 on 6 October would make him Manchester United’s youngest-ever player. The current record is held by goalkeeper David Gaskell, who was 16 years and 19 days old when he made his senior debut.
However, there is no indication that Gabriel’s first-team appearance is imminent. He did not train with the senior squad on Wednesday, while Manchester United’s Under-19 UEFA Youth League and further Premier League 2 matches remain possible routes for his development.
The teenager’s next opportunities are uncertain, with a Premier League 2 Manchester derby postponed because of United’s European commitments. His progress is creating interest, but the decision over when he is ready for senior football remains with the club.
