Red Star Belgrade fans unveiled a tifo depicting convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic before Sunday’s derby against Partizan Belgrade, which Red Star won 2-1.
Mladic was sentenced to life in prison in 2017 for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. He was held responsible for the systematic killing of non-Serb people during the wars in the former Yugoslavia between 1992 and 1995.
The crimes included the massacre of about 8,000 men and boys at Srebrenica and the siege of Sarajevo, in which more than 10,000 people died.
Red Star had already been fined €90,000 (£77,000) by Uefa this season after fans displayed a banner commemorating Mladic during a Europa League play-off against Czech club FC Viktoria Plzen last month.
The club’s social media accounts published a video of the tifo and showed the two teams observing a minute’s silence for Mladic, alongside a saluting emoji. The official account of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s national football team responded with an obscenity.
Mladic remains a celebrated figure for some in Serbia. Thousands gathered at a church in Belgrade for a public memorial held alongside his funeral on Monday, according to the report.
