The term “maybelationship” describes a dating dynamic in which two people share emotional closeness and behave like partners without defining their relationship. The Indian Express reports that the pattern can offer intimacy while allowing those involved to avoid a clear commitment.
Unlike a relationship that is gradually developing, a maybelationship is marked by uncertainty about whether the connection is moving forward. Counselling psychologist Damini Grover told The Indian Express that the key difference from a slow-burn relationship is the absence of a clear sense of progress.
When closeness has no clear definition
People in a maybelationship may spend significant time together and maintain an emotional bond, while leaving the status of the connection unresolved. They may act in ways associated with a partnership, but without an explicit understanding of what they are to each other or where the relationship is headed. That lack of definition can be appealing because it postpones a difficult decision. Experts cited by The Indian Express say that, for some people, choosing whether to commit can feel riskier than continuing to wait. Remaining in an undefined stage may seem to preserve the connection without forcing either person to confront the possibility of rejection.
Ambiguity can therefore provide a form of emotional protection. It may reduce the immediate risk of hearing “no” while allowing people to retain closeness and companionship. The arrangement can also involve less accountability than a clearly defined partnership, because expectations and responsibilities have not been openly established.
Why people may avoid commitment
Fear of rejection is one factor experts associate with the pattern. A person may want the emotional benefits of a relationship but feel hesitant about asking for clarity, especially when the outcome is uncertain.Past relationship hurt can make commitment feel unsafe as well. Experiences from earlier relationships may encourage someone to hold back rather than risk becoming vulnerable again. Staying in an undefined connection can then appear more manageable than making a firm decision about the future.
This does not necessarily mean that everyone involved is deliberately avoiding responsibility or manipulating the other person. The uncertainty may result from hesitation, conflicting expectations or discomfort with difficult conversations. However, the absence of a shared understanding can become increasingly difficult when the two people want different things.
When uncertainty becomes stressful
A maybelationship may feel workable while both people are comfortable with its ambiguity. Problems can emerge when one partner begins seeking greater consistency, exclusivity or commitment and the other continues to avoid defining the relationship.Experts warn that uncertainty can then become a source of anxiety. Without clarity, one person may be left trying to interpret mixed signals or determine whether the connection is progressing at all. The emotional closeness remains, but the lack of a clear direction can make the arrangement feel unstable.
The central issue, as described in the report, is not simply how quickly a relationship develops. It is whether there is a shared sense that it is developing. A slow-burn relationship may move cautiously while still showing progress; a maybelationship remains characterised by the unresolved question of what the connection means and whether it will become a committed partnership.
